For our English lessons this term , we are focusing on two great stories. Firstly, the Lighthouse Keepers Lunch where Mr Grinling (the lighthouse keeper) enjoy’s his lunch everyday, but unfortunately he is not the only one and Mrs Grinling must find a way to deliver his lunch without those pesky seagulls eating it. We will be exploring all the lovely language in this book and write a diary from Mr Grinling’s point of view. We will also write a sequel to this wonderful tale and have the opportunity to write a non-chronological report.
Our second book of the summer term is The Highway Rat, by one of our favourite authors, Julia Donaldson. Life is not safe for the other animals, as the villainous Highway Rat gallops along the highway, stealing their food. Year 2 will design, plan and write a wanted poster to see if they can catch the dastardly Highway Rat. Using this text, we will also be writing letters, poetry and a narrative from the point of view of the Highway Rat.
During the Summer Term, we will continue working on the four main functions: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division as they form the basis of our Mathematics.
Other areas include:
Geometry- position and direction (up,down, forward, backward, left, right, clockwise and anticlockwise)
Measurement- Telling the time- initially o’clock and half past
Quarter past and quarter to
Telling time to 5 minutes
Hours and days
Find and compare amounts of time.
Measurement- Mass (grams and kilograms); capacity (litres and millilitres) and temperature (degrees centigrade).

In order to support our Maths lessons, the children are still able to access the fantastic Mathletics website to support their learning. Your child will also now have access to Times Tables Rock Stars, another great way for your child to practise their times tables which have been set for them by their class teacher. Please see below the links to these websites:
For another great way to learn your times tables, find Percy Parker Times Tables Songs on You Tube.
During our fascinating afternoon lessons, we are focusing on some great topics in Summer term.
Continuing on from our work in Geography, where we discovered continents and oceans, we are now looking at the countries within those continents. Alongside this in Science, we are investigating animals and their habitats. We will find out why some animals prefer to live in one climate/habitat compared to another.
RE thus far this year we have been discovering all about the Christian faith, their beliefs, places of worship, traditions and celebrations. In the Summer, we will get the chance to explore Judaism and its rich culture. In addition to this, we will have the chance to enjoy their traditions surrounding this religion .The Challah bread is particularly delicious! Why not try the recipe below?
