HOMEWORK

Each week children will receive maths activities that they can complete on SUMDOG. They will also be required to complete their reading daily.

7TR- Spelling and Sumdog homework will be handed out every Friday and due in the following Friday.

Reading record books will also need to be in school every Friday to be marked.

Please support your children with bringing in their reading record books on a Friday. This will allow their class teacher to see how much reading they have done that week and celebrate the books they have enjoyed.

Throughout the year we will also send home some fun topic related projects for you to do. Our aim is to involve the parents with their topic homework and give the children a chance to showcase and celebrate their work. On Thursday 15th February, parents will be invited to come into school at 2:50pm to see all the amazing work from Year 5. This half term, our homework topic is VOLCANOES!!!

READING RECORDS

Children are free to change their reading books as many times as they like throughout the week. Children can choose books from their classroom book corner. Every other Wednesday, children in year 5 will visit the library and can choose books from there to enjoy. Reading record books are checked every Friday. Please ensure you sign their reading records.

READING

This year, we are really focussing on fostering a love of reading across the school. We would love every child to read every evening for approximately 20 mins. A guided reading session will take place daily using a variety of texts and focusing on:

  • explaining and commenting on writers’ uses of language
  • understanding, describing, selecting or retrieving information, events or ideas from texts and using quotations and references to text.
  • deducing, inferring or interpreting information, events or ideas from texts
  • Identifying and commenting on the structure and organisation of texts, including grammatical and presentational features

In addition to this, we will be reading high quality texts to the children at the end of the school day.

7TR are reading ‘Skellig’

Skellig 15th Anniversary Edition by David Almond | Hachette UK

Class Reading Spine

Here is our incredible Class Reading Spine! These books are proudly displayed on our class bookshelf.
We have chosen these as ambitious texts which cover a range of genres, themes and characters. They include narrative, poetry and non-fiction texts, to ensure our children’s reading diet is widely varied.

The class teacher will read these aloud to the children at the end of every school day. If your child particularly enjoys one of these texts, you may wish to purchase other books from the same author (many of which can be found in our school library).

LUNCHES and WATER BOTTLES

We ask for children each day to bring in a water bottle of their own with fresh water inside. Children can access their bottle throughout the day, and they will be sent home at the end of the day to be cleaned.

Each day we will ask the children what they would like for lunch. They will have a couple of options to choose from, as well as a packed lunch from home if they prefer.

PE

Children will participate in two PE lessons each week. Please can you ensure that your child has appropriate kit in school ready for the lessons. We will send the kit home at the end of every half term to be washed.

Week 1: Monday and Friday

Week 2: Tuesday and Wednesday

PE Kits should contain- White T-Shirt, Navy Blue/Black Shorts and pumps or trainers.

Emailing your class teacher

At Upton Priory, we ensure that our staff have a good work-life balance. As teachers, we enjoy the ability to communicate with you via email. We believe that it allows parents to ask important questions or raise any concerns you may have. However, we encourage our staff to only answer emails during working hours 8:30-5:30pm. Therefore, if we do not respond on a particular evening, we will do our best to get back to you the following day. Thank you.

Book Recommendations

Please follow the below link which will take you to a document containing a reading recommendation list for your child’s class.

We would encourage you to share these with your child(ren) and let us know if you have read/enjoyed any of the books on the list.

We would love to hear what you have been reading!
